PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT ASSIGNMENT

Production Management

Initial Ideas:

Idea 1:
A man who has family in a different country has saved up and spends that spare day travelling to their country to surprise them and spend the day with them before flying back to his country to continue his normal day routines.

Idea 2:
A father never gets to see his son as he's always away working, so on the day off him and his son travel around visiting different places such as theme parks and a zoo, spending time together.

Idea 3:
A teenager only has one item on his bucket list left to tick off, so he spends that extra day finally getting to do that one thing, which I have yet to decide what that is exactly.

Idea 4 (My chosen idea):
Man who is has a very tight daily work schedule and never gets to spend time away from the office spends the spare day running through wilderness trails and experiencing nature in a different way and gets to breathe fresh air.

Written Concept:
My short film will follow the story of a busy working man, who is tired of living his basic office job, 9-5 every day. He is stuck in a traffic jam on his way to work, at which point he decides to abandon his car and start running. He is in his smart shirt and tie that he wears to work each day, carrying a briefcase. He runs through some abandoned streets of Middlesbrough in the middle of the road. He runs past graffiti, abandoned houses and scruffy streets. He then runs over a bridge, drops his briefcase and loosens his tie. He takes a shortcut and runs into the back alley, leading to an open field, which he runs across. The film continues to show a montage of footage, showing the man run through different locations, until he ends up on a beach. The film ends with the man staring over the wide ocean, with the waves crashing over his feet.

Poster Designs:

I decided to design these posters for my film, which would help me describe and communicate my ideas and themes for the film, which worked great in the PowerPoint I used for my pitch, as they aided what I was saying. I produced them all in Adobe Photoshop.

Target Audience:
My Target Audience for this project would be people ages 15-25, it won’t be gender focused so it
should be for both. This is because running is universal and everyone can understand and enjoy the point I'm trying to create with this film, that everyone needs a break from the office once in a while.
Costs
There are zero - or very minor costs involved with this production that I have planned. The actor, Adam Watson has agreed to take part in the film with no fee, the locations are fairly local and won't cost anything to get there. The equipment is also free of charge, as it is all being provided from Middlesbrough College, which is brilliant and something which might have otherwise cost a lot of money if it wasn't readily available for me to use.
The Equipment:

  • 1 Canon C100's
  • a tri pod
  • Rode Mic
  • Boom Pole

Brainstorming and Development:
Legal
There wouldn't be any legal issues, as I plan to use a free music site for the audio and all of the filming would be done by myself.

Constraints

The biggest constraints for me will be whether or not Adam can run for a long period of time and act relatively well while he's doing so.  However, I can overcome this by shooting in shorter periods at a time and having breaks in between shots to give Adam a rest. I will also provide some water for him on set.

My Skills

Camera Operating and Photography
I've been using cameras for a long time for filming and photography, I use cameras on a daily basis for personal use and for work related reasons. I really enjoy doing it as it's my passion.

Editing
I edit loads of videos for in my spare time for fun as it's just something I enjoy doing and I use adobe premiere for editing.

Directing
I've filmed a lot of things in the past and for some of the projects I have been assigned as the Director, which I actually really enjoy and I think I'm personally quite good, which will be a good skill to apply on this project.

Pre production documents:
These documents are here for everybodys safety involved in the project as well as protecting
myself from any legal issues.

Final Film:

Focus Group
I set up a focus group to get feedback from my peers on my final film and I asked questions, which prompted interesting responses from the group as they mentioned things I could improve for next time and things which worked well this time around.

The summary of the focus group is that the colour grade and edit could be better and
maybe try and use a variation of interesting locations.

Video Evidence:

Improvements and What Went Wrong:
Initially, when I planned out the idea and pitched, I thought the film was going to be quite good, with a variation of different, interesting locations which would have visually enhanced the film and made my point stronger.

I think I ended up losing touch with the production as I was focusing my time on other projects and work, when I should have been focusing on this, so I would definitely have to say that my time management for this project definitely went out the window and I ended up having a very short time frame to shoot and edit the film, before I could hit the deadline. This was a shame, as I would have liked to see the planned film instead of this, as it had some good potential.

I agree with what my peers have said in the Focus Group and maybe the colour grading of the film could have been done slightly better. As said above, it would have also been better to use interesting locations. Also, I personally would have liked to use a fully trained actor and some props for me to use on the set.

If I was to do this film again, I would definitely take into consideration everything that I have mentioned above, as I think the Focus Group was a great idea to have a focused and open discussion about all the aspects of the film and suggestions upon improvement.
